#BrewEdFindYourVoice – post 1!
As many of new know I lie awake at night considering many things and my thoughts are usually linked to the following themes:
improving opportunities for educators to learn from one another;
helping educators to connect with one another;
supporting educators in finding their voices.
Due to these musings, I created #TinyVoiceTuesday #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites and the #TVTTagTeam. I have led webinars on ‘Finding Your Voice through Blogging’ and I have spoken at a number of events about all of the above bullet-points. However, I felt that more could be done and after a great chat with Ed Finch (the founding father of #BrewEd) #BrewEdFindYourVoice was created!

There will be twenty speakers and for the majority of them it will be their first time speaking at an event of this type. Their hope, and mine, is that they will inspire you for the new school year and I have to say I am pretty confident that they will. Over the next few weeks, in the run up to the big day, I will be introducing each of our speakers with a weekly ‘#BrewEdFindYourVoice’ post (this is the first). So, without further adieu, I am really pleased to introduce our first six speakers –
Chris is an Assistant Head and Year 6 class teacher in a diverse school in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. He is passionate about supporting childrens’ mental health and wellbeing, developing metacognitive strategies in class and creating experience-based learning for the children in his care. He also looks to support others in the profession, particularly with pedagogical skills and self-care. He is currently trying to improve the diversity and representation within the texts his school has available to the children, parents and staff whilst promoting contact and sales direct with authors and illustrators. Sharifah is a Deputy Headteacher and mother of four who is determined that all pupils receive the best that our sector can provide. She is passionate about developing others to be the best they can be for the children they serve and that this is only possible if we put staff first; nurture and develop them. Sharifah believes in ethical and kind leadership and writes – Performance management should be re-named Performance Development and there are many settings already leading the way with this. Every member of staff deserves a proper induction, a mentor and a voice. Every single one deserves to feel empowered, challenged and motivated. Everyone deserves to be respected and to be happy. Each member is a cog in the wheel of progress. It is not enough to just talk about mental health and well being; it is about the development of the whole being. We preach this about our children; it is also true about us.
Tom Griffiths (@TJGriffiths) is the Assistant Headteacher of a 2 form entry primary school in Solihull, West Midlands. Prior to this, Tom has worked in inner-city schools in London and Nottingham. Having spent the last 3 years teaching in Upper KS2, he is moving to Year 4 in September as the Lower KS2 phase leader. He currently leads on assessment, safeguarding and this year has been responsible for training middle leaders. Tom is also the co-host of the #EduPubChat from @MenTeachPrimary and has contributed to 2 books: ‘The Leader Reader’ and ‘What They Didn’t Teach Me on My PGCE.’
Emma is an Assistant Headteacher who teaches English at a Secondary School in North Manchester. She is the Teaching and Learning lead, the CPD Co-Ordinator, the lead on Performance Management and Literacy as well as being a Professional Mentor to NQTs. She is passionate about Literacy and encouraging pupils to read widely and uses Twitter to learn about innovative ideas about teaching and education.
Matt is an executive, leadership and wellbeing coach who works with organisations and individuals both in and out of education. He coaches a number of school leaders 1:1 as well as supporting schools and leadership teams. He trained as a primary school teacher through the GTP route and eventually became the Headteacher of a school in Kent. Following this, he spent three years in international education development working between London and Gujarat in Northern India where he was responsible for supporting and developing teaching, learning and leadership across 230 rural and tribal schools. This was through training and the introduction of a coaching approach to support development. Matt is a passionate advocate for schools and has a strong belief in the transformative power of education, which has been shaped by his experiences in India. He lives in Whitstable with his husband, dog and cat.
Kim is an Assistant Headteacher based in the North East in a two form entry primary school. She leads EYFS and is passionate about play based learning. Kim works as part of a job share and is fortunate to work with @MRSAEYFS and @MissSEYFS. She encourages her team to be like magpies and research good practice which they then adapt and make work as new ideas for the children, staff and families in their school. The Characteristic of Effective Learning; Playing and exploring, Active learning and Creating and thinking critically are at the heart of everything they do. It’s these attributes and children’s ownership of their learning that she believes every child should have the opportunity to experience whatever year group they are in. Kim writes – Be honest: Many of you get a new gadget at home and don’t bother reading the instructions and learn how to use it through trial and error. In essence play! Children need to be given time to learn through play too.
